Family Plans: How to Compare the Real Cost Per Line
Family plans are advertised in ways that make comparison hard. The fix is simple: work out the real monthly cost for your whole household, then divide by the number of lines.
Step 1: Total the monthly price
Add up the plan price for the number of lines you need. Note whether that price requires AutoPay or paperless billing.
Step 2: Add taxes and fees
Some carriers include taxes and fees in the price; others add them on top. This can change the total noticeably.
Step 3: Subtract real discounts only
Count discounts you will actually get every month. Treat limited-time promos and bill credits separately, and note when they end.
Step 4: Divide by your lines
That number is your true cost per line. Compare it across carriers.
Tips
- Not everyone needs the same plan — Some carriers let each line pick its own plan. A kid on Wi-Fi all day may not need unlimited.
- Check every person's coverage — The cheapest plan is no deal if one family member has no signal at work or school.
- Look past the first year — Intro pricing often ends after a few months.
