Compare Phone Plans
The cheapest plan is not always the best value. Start with how you actually use your phone, then compare plans on total cost, coverage where you live, and the fine print.
Plan types
- Budget plans — A set amount of data for a low monthly price. Best if you are on Wi-Fi most of the day.
- Unlimited plans — Unlimited talk, text and data, but check how much is "premium" data before speeds may slow during busy times.
- Family plans — The price per line usually drops as you add lines. Compare the total for all lines, not the headline price for one.
- Prepaid plans — Pay before each month, no credit check for service, cancel anytime. Often the same networks as the big carriers for less.
- International plans — Look for included calling and texting to the countries you call most, and what happens when you travel.
- Bring your own phone — Keep the phone you have, as long as it is unlocked and works on the new network.
Popular prepaid carriers and the networks they use
Many lower-cost carriers run on the same networks as the big three. If one network has good coverage where you live, carriers on that network are worth a look.
- Visible — Runs on Verizon's network.
- Total Wireless and Straight Talk — Verizon-owned prepaid brands.
- Mint Mobile and Ultra Mobile — Run on T-Mobile's network.
- Metro by T-Mobile — T-Mobile's prepaid brand.
- Cricket Wireless — AT&T's prepaid brand.
- Boost Mobile — Runs its own network, with partner coverage in some areas.
- US Mobile — Lets you choose between more than one major network.
Plans, prices and network details change often. Always confirm current pricing, coverage at your address and the terms on the carrier's own site before you buy.
Before you switch
- Check coverage — Use the carrier's map for your home, work and commute, not just your city.
- Check your phone — Make sure it is unlocked and compatible. See our guide to checking if your phone is unlocked.
- Keep your number — Get your account number and transfer PIN from your current carrier first. See how to switch carriers.
- Read the price — Is the advertised price with AutoPay? Is it an intro price? Are taxes and fees included?
