How to Switch Carriers and Keep Your Number
Switching takes about an hour of effort if you do it in the right order. The most important rule: do not cancel your old service first.
Step 1: Check that your phone will work
Your phone needs to be unlocked and compatible with the new carrier's network. Most carriers have a compatibility checker where you enter your phone's IMEI (dial *#06# to see it). See how to check if your phone is unlocked.
Step 2: Check what you still owe
If you are paying off a phone, leaving may make the remaining balance due right away. Look at your account before you switch.
Step 3: Get your account number and transfer PIN
Your new carrier needs your current account number and a number transfer PIN. Most carriers let you generate the PIN in their app or website.
Step 4: Sign up with the new carrier
Choose "transfer my number" when you sign up and enter the details from step 3. You will get a SIM card or set up an eSIM.
Step 5: Activate and test
Once the transfer completes, your old service ends automatically. Make a call, send a text and check data. Only then cancel anything that did not close on its own.
Common mistakes
- Canceling the old line first — Your number can be lost once the account closes.
- Typos in the account number or PIN — The most common reason transfers fail.
- Forgetting family lines — Every line you move needs to be included.
Steps vary slightly by carrier. Follow your new carrier's instructions if they differ.
